Do you consider yourself to be a glass half empty or a glass half full kind of a person? Have you ever taken a day (or an hour!) to observe the thoughts that you think on a daily basis, and have you ever considered the impacts that your thoughts might have on your health?

I don’t mean to say that how you’re feeling is all in your head, or that you’ve consciously made yourself sick by the thoughts you think.

If you have chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, anxiety, POTS, chronic pain, various sensitivities, or just a sense of general malaise, what you are feeling is real.

When you’re not well, the last thing you want to be told is that you are creating your ill health through your own thoughts – that it’s your fault somehow. It’s not your fault.

A maladaptive stress response has made your brain “sick” (neural circuitry has been cross-wired) and your thoughts have been caught up in the trauma loop of it all.

There are many steps to healing ill-health such as shifting your thought patterns including tailored brain rewiring, but did you know that if you think a thought over and over and feel a corresponding feeling repeatedly, it will actually start to alter your brain circuitry.

Your thoughts actually influence your brain’s plasticity! Therefore having an awareness of the effect that your thoughts have on your health cannot be side-stepped if you’re truly wanting to step into the best version of yourself.

I started giving my thoughts some genuine attention when I noticed how much better I would feel on vacation. I would have exhaustion and many other symptoms for weeks or end during my everyday life (click here for my full story) but when I was on a vacation, I felt healthy.

I should mention that this complete turn around in my health was also often accompanied by a huge lifestyle change on vacation as well: staying up later, drinking alcohol and eating junk food, surrounded by EMF’s and fragrances – things that at home would make me more sick.

The mind and body are linked and you cannot separate them when it comes to your health.

There is no doubt that this radical shift in my health was due at least in part by my happier thoughts while I was on vacation, however it went even deeper than that.

It was also tied to my belief in a “magic box” that I used at the time with my intention to feel healthy on vacations.

In a shamanic workshop years earlier, a shaman had instructed us all to make a beautiful box which she then blessed.

She told us that if we meditated on an intention, wrote that intention down and put it in the magic box, it would come true if it was aligned with our highest good. She warned not to overuse it – to use it only for that which we felt was really needed.

It was clear what my intention was – to feel better. Looking back, I don’t know why I didn’t write an intention of feeling healthy all the time – perhaps I didn’t believe that would be possible, or it was asking too much.

But a week or two of feeling healthy and well at a time on a fun vacation was realistic in my mind, even though I couldn’t maintain a whole day of feeling that way in my day-to-day life at home.

Perhaps there was truth in the blessing of the shaman, however what at the heart of this radical physical shift in my health was my belief that it would work.

Because if it wasn’t anything in my external environment that was making me feel better, what was happening on vacation in my internal environment that was making me healthier?

Did the belief that I would be healthy while on vacation make it so? I believe it did, and corresponded with the positive and happy feelings I was having while having adventurous, new experiences.

Not surprisingly, it only took a couple of healthy vacations before I started expecting to feel better on all my vacations. After a few trips to the Caribbean, I forgot all about the magic box because by now I expected to feel good on vacations every time.

So literally, my thoughts and feelings were creating a happier and healthier reality. Obviously being on permanent vacation was not realistic, so my question became: how do I get and maintain the “vacation-feeling” in my everyday life? What happened in my brain during these vacations?

These were some of the questions that inspired my deeper dive into neuroplasticity, eventually leading to the creation of the ReWire Your Brain Coaching Program.

Thinking greater than you feel can be hard work, especially in the beginning, but the results can be nothing short of miraculous. See if you can devote one hour to writing down everything you are thinking for that hour.

You will be amazed at how often you repeat the same thoughts, most of which do not serve you towards improved health.

Slowly, see if you can start to consciously change the thoughts you are thinking to more health-affirming ones. And add in a little fun while you’re at it. Your body and brain will thank you!
