If you have been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Long-Haul Covid, MCS, Sensitivities, Anxiety, or have 6 or more of these symptoms, then chances are that you’ve been told by a doctor or health care practitioner at some point that the problem is in your body.

You may have been told that there are issues with your cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, or endocrine systems. Or perhaps the main issues have to do with your reproductive, skeletal, or immune systems. Perhaps your bloodwork shows hormonal problems, detox issues, heavy metals, or candida overgrowth. The list goes on.

And these problems are not incorrect. You have a real physical illness with real physical problems. There are supplements and other healing modalities that may support you. But chances are they won’t cure you. It’s also likely that when you treat one symptom, another symptom will pop up.

This is because the root of these symptoms and conditions very often lies in the brain and autonomic nervous system (ANS) and not in the body. And the solution therefore lies here as well. Let me explain.

What causes chronic symptoms?

When we experience a repeated or cumulative amount of stress, this can cause trauma in our brain, causing threat circuits in the brain to fire more rapidly. The brain and ANS then get stuck in a chronic fight, flight or freeze response and become impaired.

The forms of stress that cause this trauma may be: toxic or viral, psychological, lifestyle, physical, nutritional, unresolved stress from past trauma or positive stress like a wedding or a pregnancy. (For a detailed list of all stressors, read my blog, “Your brain’s response to stress has made you sick”).

This cumulative stress builds up until it reaches a tipping point which has often been referred to as The Perfect Storm. The Perfect Storm may happen after one or two stressors, but the majority of people will go through more than 3 stressors before they reach their Perfect Storm.

This causes a maladaptive stress response, meaning that our brain and body remain on high alert even if the initial trauma is no longer present. Often unbeknownst to us, our brain and ANS are no longer responding well to stress.

When this happens, we develop a neural network (brain) impairment. This has also been called a limbic system impairment, a neural network dysfunction, and others. The name really doesn’t matter. The point being that it’s your brain and nervous system that are actually the root problem and not the body.

It turns out that a maladaptive stress response is actually at the root of many symptoms such as chronic fatigue, pain, anxiety, brain fog, digestive issues, sensitivities, sleep problems, inflammation, headaches, hormone imbalances, skin issues, and more.

Emotional symptoms can also often be part of a neural network impairment, such as anxiety, fear, hopelessness, mood swings, overreacting, anger, unexplainable crying, or feeling no emotion at all.

You may also experience intrusive negative thoughts and emotions, or find yourself “awfulizing” (negative future predicting).

What’s happened is that neural pathways for previous good health have stopped being used and new neural networks for ill-health are formed in their place, causing the illness’ symptoms.

Because the brain and the ANS are involved in every single function of the body, the symptoms of a brain and nervous system impairment are endless.

This can make chronic illness conditions very difficult to diagnose. If left unchecked, these symptoms can last for decades. For myself, it took me 15 years to heal permanently from chronic fatigue syndrome.

How do we heal from these chronic illnesses?

Modern science has shown us that the brain is not rigid and fixed as we once thought. Instead, the brain is more like that of plastic, and neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to adapt and change.

Rewiring the neural networks in the brain, combined with practical tools to calm the ANS, can shift the brain and body from a chronic state of “fight, flight, or freeze” into a state of growth and repair.

Because everyone experiencing chronic illness has unique patterns of behaviour, thought and emotion, as well as history of stress or trauma, one-on-one coaching with tailored brain rewiring techniques can help to get to the root of the maladaptive stress response specific to each individual more quickly.

The Rewire your Brain Transformational Coaching Program is drawn from many areas including neuroscience, behavioural therapy, neuro-linguistic programming, positive psychology, cognitive restructuring and appraisal, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, meditation and visualization. It was designed to help you get to the root of your condition.

Through doing various brain rewiring exercises (involving small movements and speech), and other daily habit changes through this program, new and healthier neurons can grow in your brain, supporting optimal function in all systems of the body, where growth, healing and recovery can take place.
