Dealing with chronic illness symptoms such as fatigue, sensitivities or pain for long periods can be incredibly challenging, both physically and mentally. (click here to see if you have chronic illness symptoms). It’s completely understandable and even natural to have negative thoughts in response to the difficulties you face daily.
The issue with negativity (aside from stealing your joy) is that it can lead to negative emotions, which keep the brain’s limbic system in a constant state of fight-or-flight, intensifying stress and illness. This cycle can be hard to break, but there is a way to let go of negativity once and for all, allowing our nervous systems to rest and our bodies to heal.
One important thing to remember is that negativity feels so bad because it goes against our true nature, which is love. We are meant to be happy and joyful, so when negativity takes over, it feels uncomfortable and draining. Embracing positivity aligns us with who we really are and can significantly improve our well-being.

How to break free
Understanding that we are not our minds is a key step in breaking free from this cycle. Our thoughts are just passing bits of information, programmed by the messages we received growing up and reinforced by our ongoing struggles. They don’t define us unless we let them. Recognizing this can be the beginning of true healing.
However the more we try to get rid of a bad feeling, often the more it will perpetuate. It turns out that the most powerful way to break free from negativity and suffering lies in allowing our feelings rather than resisting them.
This doesn’t mean suppressing or ignoring them but welcoming whatever we’re feeling while letting go of the thoughts attached to the feeling. When we face our fears, anxieties, and other negative emotions head-on (in an amount that feels safe for us), we can diminish their power over us. By allowing ourselves to fully experience these emotions, we prevent them from taking control. This process of feeling emotions and letting them pass through us can be truly liberating!
Letting Go
Letting go also means not feeding judgment about others and allowing people and situations to be as they are. We cannot change anything but ourselves after all and if we have chronic illness symptoms, it’s us that needs to change. We might need to set boundaries or limit our interactions with certain people while we heal, but it’s us that we need to focus on healing.
Accepting things without judgment or resistance is a form of letting go, which can bring freedom and peace. When we stop feeding fearful thoughts and emotions, we create space for our brains to heal. This healing extends to our bodies as well. Physical health improves as the mental state becomes more positive and balanced. By replacing negativity with positivity, we can break the cycle of stress and illness.
Cultivating awareness is an essential first step in this transformation. Paying attention to thoughts and recognizing them for what they are—fleeting and often untrue—can help. Challenging negative thoughts by questioning their validity helps weaken their hold.
Doing What You Love

Engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment can also help counteract negativity. Whether it’s spending time in nature, pursuing a hobby, or connecting with loved ones, these activities reinforce positive emotions and contribute to a healthier mental state. And a healthier mental state means a healthier body.
Seeking out supportive, uplifting relationships and environments helps. Distancing yourself from sources of negativity, whether they are people, media, or environments that drain your energy, is also crucial when healing from chronic illness.
Being kind to yourself during this journey is important. Celebrating progress, no matter how small, and understanding that setbacks are a natural part of the process can help maintain a positive outlook.
In Summary
For anyone dealing with chronic illness symptoms, releasing negativity is a vital part of the healing process. By understanding that thoughts are temporary and embracing our emotions, we can consciously choose a more positive outlook. This shift can help the brain heal, which will lead to improvements in physical health and a more fulfilling life.
By letting go of negativity and fostering a positive mindset, you can uncover the true magnificence within yourself. The path to healing is full of small victories and moments of self-compassion. Be gentle with yourself as you move through this process, and remember that embracing your true nature of love and happiness is always within reach.
