Clients often express to me that they never anticipated that recovering from a chronic illness would entail stepping into an improved version of themselves—a more content, joyful, and relaxed version. A version where they let go of old wounds and triggers and replace them with feelings of inner peace and self-love.

It almost makes having had chronic symptoms in the first place worth it! We forget when we’ve been sick for so long what it feels like to wake up with a smile on our face, eagerly anticipating the day ahead; to go through our day with a feeling of calmness, being truly present to each precious moment.

It almost makes having had chronic symptoms in the first place worth it! We forget when we’ve been sick for so long what it feels like to wake up with a smile on our face, eagerly anticipating the day ahead; to go through our day with a feeling of calmness, being truly present to each precious moment.

This is what life is about. We’re supposed to feel good. And it may be easier than you think to rewire your brain for these healing emotions.

Neuroplasticity, also known as brain plasticity, refers to the brain’s remarkable ability to reorganize and adapt throughout our lives in response to experiences, thoughts, and emotions.

This phenomenon demonstrates that our brains are not static entities but rather dynamic and malleable structures capable of change. By harnessing neuroplasticity, we can deliberately reshape our neural pathways to cultivate more happiness and tranquility in our lives.

When we engage in activities that evoke feelings of joy, gratitude, and compassion, we stimulate the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, which are associated with happiness and well-being.

By consistently engaging in mood-boosting activities, we strengthen neural connections associated with positivity and resilience, gradually rewiring our brains for greater inner peace and happiness.

Another key aspect of rewiring our brain for these feel-good emotions involves breaking free from harmful brain looping patterns—repetitive, negative thoughts and behaviours that contribute to stress, anxiety, and self-doubt.

These patterns often stem from deeply ingrained beliefs and past experiences, reinforcing a cycle of negativity and self-criticism. However, by interrupting these patterns and replacing them with reassuring and loving thoughts, we can gradually rewire our brains for greater emotional well-being.

Tip #1 – Revelling in past positive memories

One effective technique, and the first tip I’d like to share for breaking free from brain looping patterns and to rewire for positive feelings is through the practice of revelling in past positive memories. Reflecting on moments of joy, accomplishment, or love can not only serve as powerful reminders of our inherent worth and value but also boost our feel-good hormones.

It’s important that the memories you think of make you feel happy. If they don’t, they’re not the right memories. You want to then imagine that you are in that memory right now (since your brain doesn’t know the difference between what it’s imagining and what is real), using all of your senses to bring up the heightened positive emotions. If you can’t think of any past positive emotions then make some up, or imagine positive future visualizations of things you’d love to do in the future.

By revisiting these memories regularly and allowing ourselves to fully immerse in the positive emotions they evoke, we start to challenge negative self-talk and rewire for more elevated emotions. Over time, this practice helps rewire our brains to perceive ourselves in a more positive light, fostering greater self-love and acceptance.

Tip #2 – Mindfulness Meditation

The second tip I’d like to share is something that I’ve recently become certified in: mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation is an invaluable tool for rewiring the brain for feelings of joy, inner peace and self-love. It involves bringing our attention to the present moment without judgment, allowing us to observe our thoughts and emotions with greater clarity and compassion.

Through regular practice, mindfulness meditation strengthens the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for self-awareness and emotional regulation, while weakening the amygdala, the brain’s fear centre. This rewiring of neural circuitry enables us to respond to challenging situations with greater equanimity and self-compassion, promoting inner calm and resilience.

Tip #3 – Gratitude

The third tip is the power of gratitude. Gratitude is a potent antidote to negative brain looping patterns. It shifts our focus from what is lacking to what is abundant in our lives, fostering a sense of contentment and appreciation.

By keeping a gratitude journal or simply reflecting on three things we are thankful for each day, we activate neural pathways associated with positive emotions and well-being. Over time, this practice rewires our brains to perceive the world through a lens of abundance and gratitude, enhancing our overall sense of inner peace and fulfillment.

Rewiring our brains for healing emotions like joy, inner peace and self-love is an empowering journey that involves elevating our mood while breaking free from harmful brain looping patterns. By engaging in practices such as revelling in past positive memories, mindfulness meditation, and gratitude cultivation, we can gradually reprogram our brains to foster greater emotional well-being, resilience, and self-acceptance. With dedication and persistence, we can create lasting positive change in our lives – and in our brains – and cultivate a deep sense of joy, inner peace and self-love.
